The hat and veil may be one of the most important pieces as they cover the head and neck area which has no protection whatsoever from possible stings.  The hat should fit snugly and has a brim that covers at least the eye area.  The veil is attached to the hat and should ball at least to the shoulders but should really be longer than that.  The material the veil is made of is usually of strong cotton in which the webbing is very small so that bees go through.

The bee suit is usually an of one-piece construction.  There is only one entry point to put the suit on and there should be elastic at the cuffs and ankles.  The collar area should rise up toward the head to help protect the neck area.  The opening can be either a zipper or Velcro.  The suit should be made from a thick material, help you stay cool and allow you to breathe.  In addition, the suit should not be tight-fitting but loose enough for you to be able to easily bend over if you needed to pick something up off of the ground.  The color should be a light variation, usually white as this is less disturbing to the bees that a darker color which they associate with predators.

When you are told that you should wear bee gloves, made of leather, you may think that gloves are constricting to a point but they are necessary especially when your hands are right next to or in the hive.  You may be moving slowly and wearing white but if the bees feel that their hive is being attacked, you’ll be stung.  Shoes or preferably boots should be sturdy and made of a thick material so that the stingers cannot penetrate the material.

Beekeeping clothing is an important part of beekeeping.  The clothing is to protect you.   You are important and caring for yourself is just as important as caring for you.
